I think it's simplest just to assume that time doesn't necessarily
pass at the same rate in both universes, especially since the hole
through the void is there causing eddies in the space-time
continuum. ("He is? Well, get him out, then!")

Perhaps the void hole cuts through time at an angle.

You know, this afternoon did seem a tad diagonal.
