So... I always get nervy when people start talking about "experimental"
stories, as it does sort of imply "this filler is crap, let's call it
experimental" but thankfully this was more "a change is as good as a rest"
spoilers...

In fact, apart from the final chase and showdown with the Absorbaloff I'd
say it's RTD's best episode script - the layers of subtext worked better
here than in any of his other episodes. I pretty much take the whole story
of LINDA to be that when you enjoy something with some like-minded folks,
it's fun, but when someone tries to organise that fandom, and set rules and
expectations for it...
Well, that's when you get the sort of extremism and anti-fun that I've been
noticing on the new series boards. Likewise, Elton's speech at the end about
the destruction of the group really comments on how self-destructive fandom
is.
I really loved that Elton was such a normal bloke - that all the five or so
members of LINDA were normal folk. When he got his slab with Moaning Myrtle
on, I said to Lesley (quoting Terry in Time Gentlemen Please) that "well, a
mouth's a mouth." She was somewhat shocked to then hear "we still have sort
of a love life" so I was right!. In fact, can't we keep Elton and Ursula as
companions - Marc Warren was great.
Downsides- I still didn't like the Scrappy Doo chase scene, though I didn't
hate it as much when I saw it was kind of Elton's interpretation of the
event, and not literal. I also wasn't taken with Peter Kay's performance,
though it wasn't as awful as it could have been. Also, if you're going to
represent the scary bits with off-screen screams, maybe it'd be a better
idea to not drown the scream out with a musical tone. And I could have done
without the fart gag.
The final chase/showdown.... Eurgh. It must have looked good on paper.
Jackie I'm in two minds about- she's still annoying (and apparently believes
she's living in Adventures Of A Plumber's Mate - come to think of it, Marc
Warren even looks like Robin Askwith so I can understand that - but she did
actually catch up and act a bit later on.
Overall, 8/10 but more for the script than the on-screen result. The
direction wasn't good and the final chase... urg.
Overall, in a way I think I'm looking at it the way I look at Paradise
Towers- that was a witty script killed stone dead by direction, design,
music and acting. And those are the drag factors on this script too.
If someone smeared *** on your telly and told you it was Doctor Who you'd still give it 8/10. If they put it on your plate and said RTD had produced it out you'd eat it.
