The first time I saw Eccleston in a movie I had a similar issue
understanding his speech (and in the Rose episode I always seem to be
paying more attention to Billie's cleavage than to her diction). Its
worth paying close attention to Eccleston's speech though: he has some
really good one-liners in the later episodes (I'm waiting to see if
SciFi censors any).
"Don't drop the banana!" - I love that exchange, so much so that
I've made it my signature on some forums I frequent.
Being American, I also had a few problems here and there with
the dialogue, not only because of accent, but I also think because
of dialect. "No use stood 'round her chin-wagging all day..." threw
me for a few viewings. (That's what I THINK he said, anyway.)
But what I loved about the Eccleston doctor was the layers to
the character. He was often a joking clown, but sometimes the
pain of what he's been through came through beautifully in glimpses.
A great example was in "Rose". When they're walking from her
apartment, he's being the jovial clown. After she asks who he is,
and he gives her the runaround, he walks away from her - the look
on his face says it all. Alone.
I'm really going to miss this doctor. We just didn't get enough of
him, and I think it's our loss.
