yes, indeed he was - i said as much in the very next line you cut out.
(and i'd go for sweet, too, although mcgann's portrayal played that
aspect up a lot more)
i was talking about their acting roles *before* they became the doctor.
eccleston had a history of playing pretty dour northerners, whereas
mcgann had done stuff like 'withnail and i'. based on their previous
work - their work as the doctor sight unseen - i'd probably have chosen
mcgann.
