Really? I thought Eccleston's Doctor was quite naive and vulnerable
(although perhaps not 'sweet'). For all his 'stupid apes' talk and
badass look, he makes a lot of mistakes - allowing Rose to attend her
father's death, letting Adam run around freely and then criticizing him
for getting into trouble, mishandling the Gelth situation from the very
beginning, choking when given the chance to destroy the Daleks, etc. -
and he is painfully aware of these and his other failings. He breaks
down repeatedly at the memory of his role in the Time War, he is easily
worn down by the Slitheen's analysis of his weaknesses in 'Boom Town' .
.. . he even makes jokes before regenerating about how Rose would prefer
he have a different face. The tough guy window dressing covers up a
very insecure and sad Doctor - I thought he was the most vulnerable
since Davison, personally.
