Because while it was *watched*, it rarely if ever got *respect*. The
critics were generally condescending or hostile towards it from year
one onwards, and the Beeb often treated it as an inexplicably popular
cheap dumping-ground for junior personnel, not as a prestige drama.
This year, that's all changed: it's one of the jewels in the BBC's
crown, and is being seriously talked about for BAFTAs. Not childrens'
BAFTAs, BAFTAs.
It's just astonishingly wonderful.
