Sue's HHI Trip - Day 2 of 6

DAY 2 – Friday 5/27/11
Who: Sue (52), DVC member

Plan: Beach, Dinner

Actual: I was up later than expected last night, but when I went to
bed I slept well. I do have neighbors next door (heard them this
afternoon) but it was silent all night. I love it like that! Being
on the top floor I have no heavy footed people or wild banshee
children creating unnecessary and obnoxious noise, so I’m much happier
with this room so far.

I woke up between 6 and 6:30 to a cloudy day. But, here it’s so muggy
right now that caused the clouds. By 7:30 they were really trying to
burn off, and it’s supposed to be pretty sunny until just after noon.
The afternoon and evening could have thunderstorms or showers, but the
greatest chance of rain is inland rather than here on the coast. SB
was up early too, so we chatted and then I got up to make some
cappuccino. I’d had another update from Linda and learned the problem
with flights today is some nascar race in Charlotte, which is where
she has to change planes. At this point it looks like flying out
Saturday morning will be her best bet, but we’ll see. It’d work
better if she could get in tonight, but I don’t know if that will
happen.

Around 9:15 I ate some of the leftover Cajun chicken pasta from last
night and then drove over to the beach house. A message was on the
phone saying the beach house was closed until 10 due to a water outage
problem, but I never even set foot inside so it didn’t impact me. I
parked under the building (love parking in shade) and walked onto the
beach. They have new blue mats making the walk much easier – nice
touch!

The beach here is really wide, and since the tide was out now the
beach was even wider. I set up my chair ahead of the row of rental
chairs and it was a great spot. There were a lot of people on the
beach but the ones with kids had well behaved kids for a change. It
was cloudy at first but by 10:15 the sun had broken through the clouds
and it was mostly sunny the rest of my time there. I used the time to
catch up on some phone calls, including SB and my dad, and even
Linda. On a sad note a good friend called and told me her twin sister
was just diagnosed with cancer that has spread to multiple organs.
She was diagnosed yesterday and has surgery on Tuesday, to be followed
by chemo & radiation. Hopefully her experience will be easier than
expected, like mine was – both twins are tough broads!

The weather on the beach was beautiful – perhaps a little on the warm
side, but a nice breeze off the water kept it comfortable. Shortly
after noon I decided to call it quits for today. I drove back to the
resort and decided to ride the bike over to Piggly Wiggly. My only
exercise lately is walking, so I discovered I’m pathetically out of
shape. I rode around behind the mall and by the time I got to Piggly
Wiggly I was sweating and feeling nausea. I found a shady spot and
sat on the curb (there was a breeze) until I felt better, then went
inside.

I was mainly looking for something for breakfast tomorrow and I
remembered Piggly Wiggly having an impressive bakery. Well, their
bakery is pretty much all cakes and other desserts but breakfast was
pretty lacking. While there a man told me I had a beautiful tan and I
told him I brought it with me. Turns out he’s from FL too. I ended
up buying a roll (had butter from Skull Creek Boathouse in the room)
and headed back to the resort. I’m embarrassed to say I had to stop
in the shade again on the way back, but maybe part of it was from not
really eating anything substantial earlier. Soon I was back at the
resort, where I ate a few more bites of the pasta and took a shower.

After getting dressed I wandered around outside for a little bit,
taking a few pictures. One of the cast members told me I have a
beautiful tan, lol. They should be used to tan people here, or maybe
they see more sunburns than anything else. I stopped in Big Murgie’s
Den, where a father & son were finishing up a game of pool. The
lemonade was out but no cookies yet, so I decided to come back at
3pm. I did stop at the front desk and admitted to being studio scum
wondering if it was possible to get wine glasses. They responded with
a cheerful “of course” and sent someone up to the room with 2 glasses
in a few minutes. Once I got back to the room and started watching
General Hospital I forgot about the cookies until 3:30, and by then
they were gone. They may bring out another basket, but there’s no
guarantee – plus they could go quickly depending on who passes
through.

I could hear a little thunder in the distance (inland), and it became
completely overcast. If it has to rain I hope it’s not until after
I’m in for the night later. After General Hospital I changed clothes
and noticed it was raining lightly. I pulled the rocking chairs and
table back under the covered half of the balcony, in case I wanted to
sit out there later. Just before 4:30 I went downstairs and drove
over to Wise Guys for their early bird dinner. Their menus are at
www.wiseguyshhi.com.

By now the rain had stopped – it must have been a very brief and very
light shower. The sun was shining by the end of dinner. Wise Guys
has a special 3-course dinner for $15 until 5:30 each night and on
Fridays they open at 4 rather than 4:30. I was the first customer to
arrive, surprising the staff who were all huddled by the bar
socializing. I was given the choice of eating inside or outside and I
chose outside. Some tables are exposed, but several are under an
awning or overhang, so it was completely dry. They had fans set up
outside to move the air, so it was quite pleasant.

I was happy to see I did not have the server friends have been
unimpressed by, instead having Madison and her trainee Jim. They did
a great job – attentive but not hovering. I went with choices from
the early bird dinner, figuring I’d come back with Linda and order
from the regular menu. They give diners a choice of 6 first courses,
5 second (soup/salad) courses and 10 entrees. I went with the
homemade pimento cheese spread because I’m not crazy about the choices
in this section and I liked this last year. For 2nd course I know the
Wise Guys salad is outstanding but that’s on the regular menu so I
went with the mozzarella and tomato salad that’s not on the regular
menu. These 2 items came out together on a long plate.

The tomato salad consisted of 3 half slices of tomato with 3 half
slices of natural mozzarella, drizzled with something light and topped
with fresh basil. It was delicious. The pimento cheese was also
good. For entrée I went with the baby back ribs, which came with napa
slaw and goat cheese whipped potatoes. There were 3 ribs, but they
had a LOT of meat on them. I didn’t care for the slaw but did like
the tiny scoop of mashed potatoes. Overall it was an excellent meal,
and I ate all but some of the pimento cheese (and the slaw). They
offer a house wine for $3.25 during happy hour, so I had that – a
chardonnay, which is my least favorite white wine. I was too full for
dessert, but it’d be fun to try one with other people some time.

While I was there I read my kindle, and one of my servers brought
another employee over to see it. Evidently this guy is thinking of
getting one for his daughter, but he’d never actually seen one. I
left there and drove to Fresh Market, again thinking of tomorrow’s
breakfast. Instead I bought a piece of chocolate cheesecake (it was
on sale – I had to!) and then headed back to the resort.

I changed back into shorts and went out for a bike ride, not needing
to take any more rests! I rode along the marina and through the
resort, enjoying the cooler early evening air. Eventually I went back
upstairs and joined SB’s game online, trying a few bites of cheesecake
but I was still too full to eat it. Hmmm, maybe that will be
breakfast, lol! I was torn between cappuccino or wine and the early
vote on facebook was wine so I moved the computer outside to the porch
and went to the ice machine to get some ice (I like my wine cold).

It was a pleasant evening out there over the water – the railing is
not solid so I can see a lot of the water. There was a beautiful
breeze, and a lot of the clouds had cleared away. It really doesn’t
get much better than this! I had a glass of wine on the little table,
and the computer on a pillow on my lap. There’s an outlet on the
porch, so I didn’t have to rely on the battery, either.

I was out there maybe 5 minutes when loudmouth next door neighbors
with a couple of noisy boys went out onto their porch. Ugh - let’s
hope they’re not a problem. They didn’t stay out there long, thank
goodness but came back out again several times before finally leaving
for dinner. The couple on the other side of me were also on their
porch, but they are nice quiet people (like I try to be).

I stayed outside until after 9 before going back inside. It was
really pleasant out on the porch, although once it got dark it was
hard to find the keys on the computer <g>. I made some cappuccino and
got in bed for the end of SB’s game, which was absolutely pitiful.
They’re barely hitting and they’re not pitching at all. I think I
could have done the same quality of job as the pitchers tonight, and
that’s not saying much <g>.

Today was a delightful day, even with the threat of crappy weather. I
really enjoyed my morning on the beach, and dinner was excellent. I
love this resort, and just hope the family next door is quiet so I
don’t have to call over there. Tomorrow Linda is planning to be at
the airport (Boston) to catch a morning flight to Charlotte, unsure of
whether she’ll get onto the early connecting flight or have to wait.
She said she’s definitely coming, no matter how long it takes!
