MANY of us went through a similar experience. Norton was fine but
Symantic F'd up the product and lots apeople dumped it.

I've been using AVG for, Idunno, 8 years? Still do one a few pc's but
switched my main pc to Avira about a year ago. AVG just came out with
a new version a week or so ago. I've been planning on taking another
look at it and maybe going back to it on my main pc.

Long story short, Avira here, AVG here, both free versions. Satisfied
cuz it does the job with miinimal system impact.
I've had many problems with Norton the last time I tried them a few
years ago. Uninstalling did not remove a lot of crap and registry
entries. Took reformats to get rid of it. The suite was huge and
slow. I'm currently using AVG but have also used Avast! in the past
and occasinally run PC-cillin online . Along with antivirus software,
you need multiple malware scanners (Ad-aware and Spybot Search and
Destroy and Malwarebytes Antimalware.) If you do not have a router
and use the built in firewall you should get a software firewall to
block incoming AND outgoing traffic that you are not aware of. I also
use Spyware Docotor and Spyware Blaster and WinPatrol at startup to
look for startup changes. They all work very well together. They all
work very well together. You should only have ONE firewall running and
ONE Andtivirus app.

With that being said, I've been a long time subscriber to "Maximum PC"
magazine ever since they were "boot". They are a respectable
enthusiasts magazine with a no b.s. attitude. They have no problems
knowing a product or service in print if it does not perform well.
they recently did a n antivirus comparison and the current version of
Norton Internet Securit Suite earned a "9" out of 10 rating and was
described as "...the Cadillac of security suites." I wouldn't
hesitate to use Norton if you cand get a good price on it and are
uncomfortable settib up you own shop.
