They do rope it off.  They run a temporary "queue" line down the center
of the steps between the reserved section and the section to the left of
it.  Normally, reserved seating guests are directed to enter from the
backstage entrance, which is a gate at the dead end by the restrooms
near the lockers and stroller rental (the gas station).  This walkway
brings guests in right at the reserved section.  They used to have a few
CM's at the top of the section to watch for "rope hoppers" and also to
check passes for anyone that might have come through the main entrance,
or anyone that might have gotten up to get something to eat or go to the
restroom.

From Steve's report, it seems that now everyone has to go through the
main entrance and there was only one CM there checking passes and trying
to monitor the rope line all the way down the steps.  My guess is that
this is a good way to cut several CM's from the show - instead of having
a couple of CM's checking passes at the backstage entrance and a couple
monitoring the rope line, there is now only one.

That's accurate except... I have no way of knowing how many CMs were
there checking passes and monitoring the section. I found one (and
only because she was holding a flashlight). There could have been
others but, in that crowd, it would have been very diificult to find
them.

Ah ha!  She had a flashlight, which means it was dark.  Usually, the
seating for F! begins when there is still daylight, but not at this time
of year.  I'll be that makes it much more difficult to control the rope
line (and management should have thought about and compensated with more
CM's).

Not so fast there, Holmes. I never said the flashlight was on ;-)

Yes, it was past sunset... not completely night but mostly dark. In
any case, I'm fairly certain her exact words were "We were overrun..."
which implies (at least to me) that multiple CMs attempted to control
the crowd from sitting illegally in the Reserved sections but were
unsuccessful - as in the crowd ignored them.

There were a number of Brazilian tour groups there that week so maybe
they weren't ignored - the guests just couldn't understand the English
instructions... Nah!
