insane, unsustainable credit card economy we've had since the mid 80's.
I just don't want to play anymore like that, and I bet I'm not the only
consumer out there that's done.

The whole reason for the HDTV revolution is so that TV images can be
larger but without sacrificing image quality. If all you do is make the
whole image larger and keep the same number of pixels, you end up with a
very grainy image. Imagine taking a photo with a low-es "Camera phone"
and then blowing it up to poster size. It would likely not look too
good and that's what happened with TV. If you are happy with a 26" TV,
then there is no reason to invest any money in HDTV. If you want to go
larger, then you really do want to go HD.

As for this being a three-year cycle, I really don't think it is. We
bought our first HDTV over three years ago and it's still going strong.
There is no reason to replace it. Well, actually, we did sort of
replace it because we had it in the living room to being with, but then
upgraded to a larger TV and moved this one to the bedroom. Still, that
was planned. I don't see either of these TV's being replaced anytime
soon. We had our last TV for over 10 years before we replaced it and
expect the same from these.

I don't think it's a three year cycle, either. (Well, not for me.)

I had the same TV for some 10 years (it was a good Sony Wega)
but then Blu-Ray won the Hi-Def battle, and upgraded to a 47"
Sony W LCD and a PS3 and am very, very happy. I plan on having
this TV around for a looooong time.

(Although even on a small Analog set, DTV looks darn good...)

OTA DTV does have an advantage of being an all or nothing proposition.
In the Austin area, all of the network stations come in much clearer
further out. The NBC and CBS affiliates went low power on their
analog signals last weekend and some people were howling. Even though
they had been running crawlers across the screen two or three times in
each show in SD (but not HD, thank you) and KEYE ran ads for two weeks
in the Slantsman.
