I grew up spending weekends at our family lake cabin. We were on a slough that was only 5-6 feet deep with a muddy/silty bottom and the water was always hot. As kids, we used to stay in the water all day long. We'd dive down to the bottom to get big handfuls of mud to fling at our siblings and cousins. The only deaths I recall hearing about in our lakes were due to boating accidents. About the worst threat we had would be the occasional water moccasin snake, but i never knew anyone to get bitten. I had never even heard of this amoeba until reading about it here on RADP. While I am sure it's something to be aware of, it does seem a bit overblown to me.
Now, the oil slick monster, that's a totally different story...;-)
