Afternoon all,
First time on this site, very interesting! I
thought that I would touch on a subject that really ticked me off
while we were in WDW for our 6th visit a couple months ago.
There were 8 of us ( 4 stayed at a resort on site & 4 stayed off
site). We are all family myself & family , my sister & her family &
our mother. We were there for 2 weeks at the First of March.
The thing that really got me this trip ( and it happened our last
trip in 2002 as well at a TGIF'S) was that:
After a day of fighting lines & trying to get kids on the rids that
they wanted to do we decided that we wanted to have some Supper &
chose to go to the restaurant behind ,"the Living Seas , the updated
ride with Nemo in it" I forget the name of the restaurant at the
moment , but could look it up if I had to I guess. Anyway it was not a
cheap meal.. but we expected that , that was not a problem.. I think
for reference it cost me around $350.0 for my family of 4 & close to
that for the other 4 in our party ( and yes this included a $50.0 buck
bottle of wine and various drinks for the adults) so for our party it
was about a $700.0 meal ( not including tips) As i said this was not
the problem & was expected cause frankly , we were beat & just needed
to rest & have a nice meal. Well actually the meal was not very good
at all! we were very disappointed & we were extremely disappointed
with the lady who was waiting on us! She was very rude & abrupt & it
did not take long for us to realize that the main focus here was
getting us fed & out the door regardless if we were finished or not.
Anyway we probably finished up in about an hour & ordered coffee
before we left ( jump start to keep going) & then our waitress brought
us our bills.
All of the charges on our bills were fine, as it was correct &
everything that we had ordered was listed.
The part that WAS NOT fine was that when doing up our bill they had
automatically added their own tip & had based it on a party of 8 ,
even though we had 2 separate bills. Personally on my bill they had
added a tip that was around 60 bucks that was expected to be paid! My
brother in laws bill was the same , so we were CHARGED appx $120.0 for
a tip!
Now I am a very good tipper.... if I feel that the service deserves
that something extra! I am not sure if this is a Disney, or a Florida
thing , but where we come from a tip is form of gratitude to show your
server that you enjoyed your experience at their establishment & to
reward them for making your experience an enjoyable one. It is NOT to
pay their wages & is NOT to be considered mandatory , but a decision
that the customer makes based on their experience as an added BONUS to
the server for services rendered!
I paid the tip, I was not happy. My brother in law paid his tip , he
was not happy either. No we did not make waves because we just didn't
need the hassle & we were all having fun ( till then) and it was all
about the kids, and they didn't need the embarrassment of us arguing
about this!!!
However, I would NEVER go back to this restaurant & it was the worst
dining experience of our trip & for those who ask, yes I would have
left a tip even though the service was not great , but it would have
been more like 25 bucks because our waitress just didn't deserve
anymore due to poor attitude & service!
I would be very interested to find out where this Mandatory / added
to your bill stuff comes from & if you are legally required to pay
this or not. If you are and this is a law there I feel that you should
be told from the start that this will happen. It really seems like a
unilateral charge to me to make someone pay a fee that they never
agreed to pay in the first place!
comments?
gratuity
noun
1. a relatively small amount of money given for services rendered (as
by a waiter)
2. an award (as for meritorious service) given without claim or
obligation
That said we always tip 20% unless the service is horrid, I mean bad.
First. it's a reward for a job well done, it's not mandatory.
If I don't get what I ordered, or it's cold, or it's not cooked as ordered,
this is lousy service. You instruct the wait person and the wait person
should return with what you ordered and it should be prepared as ordered. I
don't want them to blame the cook or say they'll take it back or say that
they're under staffed. I don't expect 30 minutes to pass by before being
approached after being seated and I don't want to wait an hour or longer for
a meal in most cases. All of these things constitute bad service. They would
get 20% anyway, wife says so. One thing I do get away with is subtracting
the tax from the bill, I refuse to tip on a tax.
