OT: Update on DA and DM

Just a quick update on DA and DM (Dear Aunt and Dear Mom -- not
related by blood, only marriage -- and it went kaput in 1972)
I had managed to work myself into a fine lather and depressed tears @
the thought of seeing/dealing with DA and DM on a short trip. We left
IN on Friday at noon and got back Tuesday at 7:30 pm -- yes, the trip
was by car and yes, DA lives in VA and DM lives in far eastern NC.
DA is doing quite well. Against everyone's better judgement except her
own -- she's driving! We were really impressed and RELIEVED with how
well she's doing when we saw her on Saturday. I was so pleased that I
drank too much tequila -- bad EG! We discussing her moving to either
eastern NC or FL in the next year. We'd be happier if she was
somewhere that she didn't HAVE to drive!
DM is also doing well. She's been taken off of nearly all the pain
meds and psychiatric meds (word of experience - meds act differently
in someone over the age of 70). She's much clearer. Instead of SNF
(basically a nursing home) being the only long-term option, we're now
thinking that Assisted Living might work for her. She still has
degenerative dementia & it's simply not safe or practical for her to
live alone (history of pain killer seeking and ignoring everyone's
advice plus the knee replacement). BUT, thankfully, she's getting a
bit more comfortable with the SNF she's at now AND they have assisted
living apartments -- so fingers crossed everyone, Mom will agree to
and be able to move into assisted living where she's at now. While we
were at WDW in April, she spent 6 days at the hospital w/ kidney
failure, low bp, and low blood sugar (2nd time). On my birthday @ WDW,
I was simply thrilled that she was cognizant enough to know it was my
42nd birthday -- I was getting used to the idea that she probably
wouldn't be around to wish Merrry Christmas. Now, who knows.
Quiet confession -- no offense meant to anyone here -- I'm thrilled
that they're both doing so well, but part of me sighs and wonders if
things will continue on this rollercoaster for another 10 or 15 years.
