I can see your point of view but let me point out a few advantages. With
film you need to change "rolls" every 36 images (or so). With my DSLR
(Digital SLR) I can take from 125 to 1000 images before having to change
the "roll" (depending on which size memory card I am using). I also find I
am much more likely to shoot more images with the digital because even if
the shot is iffy I can try and see if it worked. If it didn't, I can
delete it and I'm not out anything but a tiny bit of power from the
batteries. Also in some situations I may take several shots to see which
one works best. For example I may shoot one metered on the shaded part of
the scene, and another metering on the sunlit portion. I have also had fun
taking some extremely HIGH resolution images by taking a bunch of smaller
images that I can then electronically stitch together into a much larger
image. For example I have one huge image of the castle from the hub that
took 65 images. I wouldn't have even concidered doing that with film. And
lastly, since you mention traveling, memory cards are MUCH less sensitive
to airport X-rays than film.
Your mention of losing pictures is another easy fix. The current prices of
relatively small memory cards (aprox 512mb) is getting so inexpensive that
you could carry lots of small cards and every few days or even once a week
(depending on the length of your trip) you can either stash the current
card in the bottom corner of your luggage or even mail it back home. And
switch to a fresh card. BTW the chance of getting a virus into your camera
is very very slim. Most of the time you will not be connecting your camera
to the internet or other sources of viruses. Even if the memory card gets
a virus from an internet cafe (where you can email your photos home) it
won't infect the camera as the software in the camera will not run a
program from the memory card unless you go through a specific series of
steps to do so. And each camera brand has a different language and load
procedure. So to get a virus into your camera you would have to have one
made specifically for your camera make and model. Think of it like the
MS/Apple gap where most viruses are made to hit MS, which makes Apple
nearly immune. Now multiply this by 10 brands and then by 10-50 models per
brand and the odds get much better. :) So you can't get a virus without
knowing it. You would have to specifically load one in.
Having said all that, there are some abilities that film has that digital
just can't (yet) match. But this list of abilities are shrinking fast as
the D-cam field is getting better and better all the time.
