This applies to white bread, white sugar, white rice, white-bleached
flour, white-cranberry/grape juice, white salt, the white parts of
iceberg lettuce, and, of course, white chocolate. :)
You actually have to be careful with bread products. There are plenty of dark breads advertised as "wheat", but made with highly refined "white" grains. The best way to identify healthy whole grains vs. unhealthy refined grains are to read the label. If you see the word "enriched", steer clear. You want to see the words "whole grain" or "stone ground". The reason enriched grains are bad is because it has been refined an pulverized to the point that all the nutrients are gone, so they had to add them back, i.e. "enrich" the bread with more vitamins. Of course the issue with whole grains doesn;t really have to do with the fact that refined grains lack those vitamins; that is just an undesirable side-effect. The reason you really want whole grains is that they are much more difficult to digest and thus do not spike blood sugar as quickly and they are also higher in natural fiber. Fiber is a desirable carbohydrate because it isn't digested and passed into the bloodstream. Instead, it becomes a nice "cleaner" for "the system".
