I'm happy to say we still had a pretty great trip. If we had never been
there, it would have been really sad. But we have been many times and
still got to see a lot and just moved slow. We wandered over to EPCOT a
lot instead of tackling a more ambitious plan. The relaxing stay at the
Beach Club was really nice. We had a ground floor patio that looked out
at the main entrance on the beach side of the resort. I spent a lot of
time relaxing there and drinking tea. It is true you can have a great
time at WDW just hanging out. It was just REALLY expensive hanging out.

Sorry about the illnesses! But at least you had fun anyway. You're right
about being able to take it easy. If you had missed days on your "only"
trip there, you'd have been pretty upset. I'm glad they offered you the
credit. We were planning to add MYW dining to our next trip, but I think
I may sit down and carefully plot it out before I do...

I'm sorry about the illness as well, however, it sounds like you almost
answered your own issue. When most people get sick after eating at WDW,
they fail to recognize just how much their usual diet has changed compared
to their eating habits back home. When your body is subjected to a sudden
change in eating habits (i.e., massive quantities of food for an extended
period of time), it will fight back. Typically, this will be in the form of
a bad stomachache, diarrhea, or a general feeling of nausea.

In addition to how much food is consumed, its just as important to take into
consideration what is being eaten. For example, if everyday, your child
eats a pastry of some sort for breakfast, chicken fingers and fries for
lunch, a burger for dinner, and ice cream at every opportunity, he/she will
end up very sick after a day or two.

Granted, I'm not saying food poisoning is impossible. I'm sure there are
cases of it happening, but from what I see from my experience working at the
front desk of WDW resorts, this is a common occurrence.

I've also seen many other cases of people traveling home with leftover
coupons. Some are due to illness that are beyond their control, some are
due to bad planning (definitely not this case!!), some are due to peoples
lack of a will to eat. Disney is well aware that, in reality, the dining
plan offers more than enough for most people to eat when used properly, but
that's exactly what they wanted. Disney doesn't want people to worry about
their food when they're at WDW.

The dining plan may not look like a lot on paper, but when considering the
portion size its more than enough. When you factor in the fact that its
hotter than sin and you're walking around all day in the sun, then its even
more food. Personally, I don't like to eat very much when I'm doing a day
at the parks, and I usually eat like a truck and I look like a barge (6ft
3in, 310 lbs).

I totally think Janice gets an A++ for her planning on getting her money's
worth on the Dining Plan. By the looks of her totals, I think she ate quite
moderately at these places. I've eaten at Japan on the Dining Plan with 2
other people and my check came to nearly $200 with tip. Sci-Fi's bill for
the same people for lunch came to about $80. Had she been able to eat what
she planned (and maybe order some more expensive stuff instead!), the Dining
plan would have been a great value.

Bottom line, before getting the plan, stop and think. Evaluate your agenda,
and think about your eating habits. Are you REALLY going to eat a decent
sized counter meal, a HUGE table service meal, AND get a snack everyday?
When I used to check in guests, to help maximize their $$, I would suggest
purchasing the infamous refillable mugs. That way, if they eat a counter
service breakfast, they can essentially save the bottled drink with their
meal and use it as another snack. Do most people need this much food?
Absolutely not, but its there just in case.

Think about how much a typical meal at WDW costs. At counter service
locations, a typical combo can cost around $10 for breakfast/lunch, $13-15
for dinner. Sit down locations can run about 15-20 for lunch entrees, and
20+ for dinner. Gratuities not included and I'm not even going to mention
alcohol. Dinner shows can run about $55 including gratuity. Snacks
(bottled soda, ice cream, popcorn) can run between $2-3 depending on what
you get. If you can eat more than $37 a day worth of food, then definitely
book the plan as it will be a tremendous savings in the long run.
