Julie, there really is no way to do that because Usenet is made up of many servers that exchange posts with each other. The server I read from is not the same as the server you read from. One of the basic features of Usenet is that every server carries every message. Of course not all servers carry all groups, and some (mostly commercial ISP's like Earthink) will "expire" posts early to prevent having to store terabytes of pirated software, but as for the text-based groups, they are all going to exchange all posts.

Of course it would be possible for a particular server to offer its subscribers a filter like they do with spam, but think of how your spam filters work (i.e. not very well). Also, there are plenty of very ugly things can be written without the use of "foul" language, and it would be nearly impossible to program a filter that could understand those double-entendres. Then you begin to get into the realm of who decides what is "appropriate". One of the great things about Usenet is there is no moderation; it's truly an environment with full freedom of speech. If you don't like that, then I might suggest you checkout the DIS boards. They are moderated and edited so you won't have to put up with these issues. Then again, just don't piss off the moderators because they will ban you.

Yes-I went to DH, who's a professional computer guru and he says you're right. When he explains things to me sometimes he gets so technical ...

I do go to other boards, of course. And I don't read all messages. But I still wish "them" to be ignored. Thanks for adding to my learning curve.
