Well, that explains a lot. I've never held a job that I didn't love.
Ever hear the career advice of "find something you'd do for free, just
out of love of doing it and make THAT your job"?
Seriously, there's never been a day that I woke up and said, "Aw, I
can't fathom dealing with work today."
The 40% of my adult life spent working in radio, I loved being in the
studio, playing music, taking on-air calls from listeners,
interviewing people. It was great.
The other 60% of my adult life spent working in night clubs is also
incredibly fun. A night like last night, with the place packed wall
to wall and customers telling me, repeatedly, how much fun they are
having - knowing I helped create that fun for them - is about as
rewarding as it gets. Looking at the figures at the end of the night
and calculating my commission for the evening is just icing on the
cake.
There's a lot to be said about creating a career vs. taking a job.
Is this why you're so adament? Do you really think that all those
servers hate their jobs? Do you really think they are getting stiffed
on tips by a lot of people?
Here's the truth. The vast majority of customers - as in WAY over 90%
- are wonderful people and they tip just fine. Most servers are just
as happy to receive a 15% tip on a huge tab as they would be a 20% tip
on a smaller tab. Those websites you find where servers bitch about
bad customers are a place to vent. They are talking about one idiot
who made their day a living hell. People who've never worked in the
business find them and think that that's how servers see all their
customers. No, not true at all. They are discussing extremes.
Anyone who has worked in retail sales or hospitality can confirm this.
Most days go by without incident. It's that one weird clown who comes
along and just goes out of his or her way to make the job difficult.
In the hospitality area, when that same idiot doesn't tip, it's all
the worse.
Please note these types are RARELY seen.
