Perhaps a little analogy would be useful. In
driving a car around a curve, such as on an
off-ramp, a good driver hugs the inside of
the curve, making the car go "linearly" as
much as possible, then puts in just a little
more (linear) gas to negotiate/end the curve.
A mediocre/bad driver hugs the outside of
the curve, then turns the steering wheel a
little to end the curve (which could cause
side-slide). The car leans ("inward") due to
the banking of the road and the mechanics
of its own suspension and ball joint + tie rod.
The "head out" technique is similar to the
second way of moving.
