Re: Path to 9/11 Sun and Mon Nights ABC

Ed,

Both you and David are absolutely correct in this matter. What every
one seems to ignore here is exactly what is written in the 9/11 report.

For example, here's a verbatim quote starting on page 109 of the .pdf
version of the 9/11 Commission report:

"In late 1995, when Bin Ladin was still in Sudan, the State Department
and the CIA learned that Sudanese officials were discussing with the
Saudi government the possibility of expelling Bin Ladin. U.S.
Ambassador Timothy Carney encouraged the Sudanese to pursue this
course. The Saudis, however, did not want Bin Ladin, giving as their
reason their revocation of his citizenship."

(Now here's the statement that blows Wheaton's claim out the window,
please pay attention John.)

"Sudan's Minister of Defense, Fatih Erwa, has claimed that Sudan
offered to hand Bin Ladin over to the United States. The Commission
has found no credible evidence that this was so."

(John, you might want to read this again)

"Sudan's Minister of Defense, Fatih Erwa, has claimed that Sudan
offered to hand Bin Ladin over to the United States. The Commission
has found no credible evidence that this was so."

(John, I know you might think this is not, in fact, from the 9/11
Commission Report (especially coming from a "far left secular
progressive", as I'm sure your hero Bill O'Reilly would label me), so
please don't take my word for it. Just turn to page 109 & 110 of the
9/11 commission report and read it your self, there are plenty of
copies online)

and to further quote from the 9/11report from page 131:

"Impressions vary as to who actually decided not to proceed with the
operation. Clarke told us that the CSG saw the plan as flawed. He was
said to have described it to a colleague on the NSC staff as
"half-assed" and predicted that the principles would not approve it.
"Jeff" (an unnamed CIA operative in charge of developing this plan)
thought the decision had been made at the cabinet level. James Pavitt
(the assistant head of the Directorate of Operations for the CIA)
thought that it was Berger's doing, though perhaps on Tenet's
advice. Tenet told us (the 9/11 Commission) that given the
recommendation of his chief operations officers, he alone had decided
to "turn off" the operation. He had simply informed Berger, who had not
pushed back. Berger's recollection was similar. He said the plan was
never presented to the White House for a decision.

The CIA's senior management clearly did not think the plan would
work. Tenet's deputy director of operations wrote to Berger a few
weeks later that the CIA assessed the tribals' ability to capture Bin
Laden and deliver him to U.S. officials as low. But working level CIA
officers were disappointed. Before it was canceled, Schroen described
it as the "best plan we are going to come up with to capture [Bin
Laden] while he is in Afghanistan and bring him to justice," No capture
plan before 9/11 ever again attained the same level of detail and
preparation. The tribals' reported readiness to act diminished. And
Bin Laden's security precautions and defenses became more elaborate and
formidable."

So, any effort to depict Sandy Berger on the phone with some covert CIA
field commander
asking for permission to fire a missle or any other form of attack on
Bin Ladin is simply a fabrication, a lie, an untruth. It clearly
states that while there was lots of discussion and planning on the
matter, George Tenet ultimately decided to shut down the operation and
simply let Berger know what his decision was. Berger did not rescend a
request to fire. That notion is a complete fabrication.

There is one thing that always bothers me when 9/11 is referenced. The
terrorists didnt' kill ONLY US citizens. Mostly, yes. And the losses and
after shocks were most felt in your homes. But there were others, among them
Canadians, Brits, Germans, Israelis, and others who lives were taken. These
are always forgotten.

Bush especially makes a constant gaffe of forgetting Canadian involvement in
the "War on Terrorism". And we are bringing out soldiers home from
Aghanistan in coffins these days. We don't mind. We made a commitment to
help a friend and we're keeping to it, but it sure would be nice if the
friend occasionally said "thanks".

Peter D -- My girlfriend in Mississauga was in tears after 9/11 for the
reasons you mention. Following 9/11, Canada showed so much hospitality
to us and our ships that were redirected from New York to your "down
east". The President did mention Canada's involvement later in a speech
from the Rose Garden.....but it was later than it should have been.

Much of the world was in tears and stood by us immediately after 9/11.
Now, the same people seem to hate us. I wonder what caused them to change
their minds.

I am not aware this sort of thing is still happening......it is not
right, and I apologize for our President.

Don't start apologizing for Bush. It's a career job. :-)

Is this program billed as a drama or a documentary ??

It's billed as a docudrama based on the Commission's Report.

Who determines whether it is a docudrama or

a drama...... the " Commission " or ABC Television

I think it's a matter of definition. A documentary is a presentation of
facts. A docudrama is a drama based on factual happenings, but necessarily
factual itself.
