Huh? If you turn 180 to the left on your right foot, how
is it natural to step back? On which foot? The more
natural movement is to step to the side on the left
foot and either close with the right foot, or more easily,
step forward with it (usually with facing change).

A dancer's body momentum direction doesn't change just because the
body rotated. If the dancer's body is moving north, face first, and
the dancer pivots on a given foot (it doesn't matter which foot, or
which direction the pivot), the body is still moving north, but now
it's moving backwards (facing south). The next natural step is
backwards (still moving north). The dancer can either continue to
move backwards, or the back step can be the step used to stop the
northward momentum, which makes the back step a break step.

It's hard to diagnose a dance problem in text form. But I'm
starting to wonder whether avid's followers haven't been
trained to keep going down the slot, but instead are stopping
and spinning in front of him on step "1". Or perhaps he
is improperly leading them to stop travelling before step
"2". This would explain why he thinks his followers are in
his way and blocking him from crossing the slot. In cross
body hold, the leader should send his right arm diagonally
down the slot with the travelling follower, and not check
her momentum until step "3".

All 3 of the followers steps on "1 2 3" of a Hustle
basic should nearly easy walking size steps (if not more)
progressing linearly down the slot, the first step forward
and the last step backing, the direction of the middle step
depending on the direction of turn. Maybe in Salsa he stops
them on the first step and then turns them. In Hustle they
should keep going until the 3rd step, turning while they
travel, before they stop moving down the slot.

IMHO. YMMV.
