Your rotary swing is indeed a mistake in the majority of cases. CBM
alters the orientation of the body, but it should not curve the track
of travel. To curve the travel, you have to produce a centripital
acceleration as a release of some stored energy - where is that going
to come from? Your partner?
I wouldn't call this a mistake but rather just bad dancing, given
that most untrained/inexperienced dancers think that whipping
each other around is the way to partner dance. A mistake
implies that the partipants can be (easily) convinced that what
they do is wrong.
Pivots do not involve curved movement in the horizontal plane. They
involve rotation, superimposed on linear movement. If they invovled
curving around your partner, you would have to hold on for dear life to
create the centripital acceleration... I've met people who do that...
For a very similar reason as this, your analysis of the vertical-
plane (simplistically speaking, pendular and metronomic)
swinging motion involves excessive (imagined) curvature.
