"Illegal immigrants are destroying the city"
By: Steven Foley ·
In conversation with one of my tenants this evening, she commented
that she got her Green Card last Friday. She's been living in my
place for eight years.
"How long have you been here?"
"Thirteen years." No, she doesn't speak English.
"How'd you get here?"
"Mojada [I don't ask about my tenants' citizenship or status]. A
coyote took a busload of us from Mexico City to Tucson and another
brought me here."
She told about how a Mexican migra tried to take all of her money. He
got five thousand pesos but she had more stashed away (doing the
calculation, she probably meant to say five hundred pesos).
Anyway, now she has legal status.
Ike -- So what is your point that is in reference to the article I
posted?........you are proud of the fact that you were renting to an
illegal?......you would do it again if it was against the law?..... you did
not ask for proof of citizenship and never would? ......that your tenant
had a heartbreaking and tragic story surrounding her choice of illegal
entry into this country...........what?????
Maybe you are part of the problem.
Maybe he is simply one of those American citizens who believes in individual
rights and freedoms. Ike and I have disagreed on things, but in this he's
most right.
Peter D -- America is a land built by immigrants.- legal immigrants,
NOT illegal. They entered through controlled processes. We American
citizens believe in individual rights and freedoms; we American
citizens believe in obeying the law; and we American citizens know
there is a reason for these laws. There are reasons for having and
enforcing these laws for illegal immigration......and one very good
reason for the need to control illegal immigration is health. Using
Ike's example of his tenant coming here with a busload of illegals --
no control of what diseases were brought in with them.

Miki, I'm curious. What right does a landlord have to ask a tenant for proof
of citizenship? Maybe there's a law requiring a landlord to ask for proof of
citizenship. I don't know. If there were, I'd describe it as "draconian".
Were you ever asked to prove your citizenship prior to renting? No, you
weren't -- you're white so you're right!
When I sold my home last year and wanted to rent my current apartment,
on my application the following was requested: valid Social Security
number; copies of the last three months of personal bank account
statements, last three months' payroll check stubs; copies of last 2
years personal income tax returns signed by CPA; valid driver's
license; passport or State issued photo I.D; previous places of
residence; ownership of car and make, model, year.
BTW, did you ask those brown-skinned, Spanish-speaking people in the ER for
proof of citizenship? Maybe you did. You never did clarify how you knew they
were ""illegals". Do tell.
Illegals require more paperwork and a translator. Their admittance is a
long and tedious process as opposed to those who show proper I.D and
insurance cards. In the hospital that took care of our emergencies,
there was a separate desk for those without proper papers.
