ego-driven controlling leaders, although often times superior dancers, can give a good dance but are rarely fun to dance with.
An important statement that every Leader should understand.
I've often said that, at a dance convention, we're all "good". Ah, but being "fun to dance with" is something that we should all be thrilled to hear and, if we don't, wonder why.
As a judge, I have to put personal feelings aside
I admire judges' attempt to do that. I know to a certainty that one who dislikes me personally and would rather not dance with me placed me and my partner First in a small, local, competition.

the entire performance and not allow the leader to do his job
I hate it when that happens.

Some people went on and on about how if he hadn't caught her she would have been injured.
A year or three ago, I suffered an injury (reported here) unquestionably caused by my Follower turning when she was not Led to do so and then throwing her weight (with inertia) into my arm depending upon me to support her. Well, I did, dammit, but I shoulda dropt her. The supporting arm turned sorta black from the base of the thumb to the crux of the elbow.
Based upon your telling of the tale, he did the correct thing but it could very easily have turned out dif'rently.
