I'd like to intrude an actual example into the hypotheticals (which can be
steered and refined to make any pointanyone wishes).
Salsa dancing. Very experienced, competent, considerate, a good lead
according to the ladies he's danced with, and based on my observations of
hours upon hours of seeing him dance over at least two years. His partner? A
somewhat unknown but appeared to be almost as skilled/knowledgeable, maybe a
good follow (based on about three months observation only).
At one point he appeared to let go off her hand and she stumbled back.
Before she fell he caught both her hands and helped her steady herself and
regain her balance. It turned out he released her hand deliberately. He knew
she would stumble back. Was he being reckless and endangering her? It would
seem so because had he not caught her she surely would have fallen backwards
onto a hard floor. Why did he do it? Because she appeared to grab his hand
and was about to twist his arm. He didn't want to be injured so he released
(or forced the release of) his hand. Knowing she would stumble he then moved
to catch her.
Me, I think he did the right thing. He avoided an injury to himself caused
by her actions -- whether deliberate, a hijack, a misunderstood signal, or
inattention, whatever it was doesn't actually matter. He also saved her from
an injury. Yes, her ego was a bit bruised by the stumble and yes, she did
make much of it for a few minutes. But all in all no-one got hurt and that
is what mattered.
Some people went on and on about how if he hadn't caught her she would have
been injured. And some think he should have risked the injury regardless,
some sort of misconceptionthat requires a lead to be injured regardless. The
fact was that she wasn't (physically) injured and neither was he. I regard
that as very good leading on his part. I expect others will disagree. :-)
