How about this as a position to advocate- for each major listed in a school catalog, they should list the percentage of people holding that degree from the last 30 years who actually have paying work in that field, and of that total, how many are TEACHING it? Since my major is probably one of the leaders in the self-perpetuating category, advocating this shouldn't be a slam on anyone else.
