Big mistake.

Several suggested workarounds below.

1. On my machine at least, it takes a long time to load, and if I
forget and don't flip back to my main Google tab before I close, then
next time I open my browser, it goes straight to the comics tab, and I
have to sit and wait.

If you load the plugin called Custom Comics Page, which is the best because
it has the most variety, this is true. I am less put off than you about the
slow load time, because for me the breadth of the selection is worth it.

What I have done is to duplicate the plugin, so I have several of them each
with their own selection of strips on the same page. I have also created
another tab and it, too, has the same plugin loaded several times with
different copies of each.

But, the best tip for slow loads is to keep the plugins minimized. Keeping
them minimized seriously lowers the load time for the overall iGoogle page,
and I have some ten tabs on mine, not just comics. Further, expanding the
plugins to read the comics does not seriously increase load time.

3. A couple of the comics I marked on my Google list still don't
appear on the page (such as User Friendly). Others seem to be rather
erratic; 9 Chickweed Lane didn't show the Sunday comic this morning,
but now it's here ... but it's after midnight and I can see the Monday
comic elsewhere.

I had that problem, too. Strips would not load in alphabetical order, BC
before 9CWL, for example. My workaround was to create several pages with a
few strips in each. This way the pages load in something approaching
alphabetical order.

In sum:

Create more than one Comics tab
Load different kinds of comics plugins
Load multiple instances of the same plugin with different configurations in
each.
Start with all plugins minimized

BTW, did anyone else notice that Google apparently licenses many of its
comics from the Houston Chronicle? Watch some of the strips load, and
you'll see Chron ads before the strip appears. Not sure of the legality of
this, but then IANAL ..
