Ok, technically I suppose the guy is *following* Becky on tour, but isn't
he doing something bolder than April? How is she leading in any sense?
Leaving school to take a shot at being a professional musician is very
risky, but if that's his dream, and his starting point is a national tour,
why not go for it?
I thought, no surprise, that this was a near-perfect example of how
Lynn seems to handle the "holy Patterson" response to potential
situations that cross the paths of the characters. Gerald was made to
repeat "FOLLOW my dream" twice (emphasis mine) in the penultimate
panel, in order for the punchline -- April's comment about leading--
to make any sort of sense at all. In now-classic fashion, the
character with whom we are supposed to be identifying now comes across
as insensitive and self-righteous and condescending, the sort of
person, were I Gerald, with whom I'd be hesitant about sharing any
further intimacies.
