IMO...and I could be wrong...the joke is that the king lacks 'feelings'.
Which isn't the same thing as being a good joke, but it is a joke.
Obviously, the king has some feelings, just not any that are productive for
others.
I thought it was an extremely feeble pun: "feelings" vs. "feed him."
This hypothesis is similar to yours in that it isn't a good joke, but
it is something other than random ink.
My hypothesis is the King resents the Troubador for starting
halfway through the song instead of somewhere near the beginning.
