I might have been the one pissing off Ronniecat and also possibly
Mike. I read here quite often (and have been reading and posting for
awhile, so I'm not that new). I recognize names, but I don't know who
is prolific or a major player here or whatever. Also, due to the
nature of this medium, I found some of comments nasty and defensive,
when in reality, he probably didn't intend them to be that way. I also
feel that, in that past, I've received inappropriately snappish/snotty
repsonses to things I've said.
And, of course, I reacted in a defensive way. I just feel that,
recently, I've left so many LJ (livejournals, not Lynn Johnstons) that
I liked because of the overly familiar, in-club-y feel. It's hard not
to feel like I'm actively being chased away when I see other folks
having casual, off-topic conversations, and I'm getting snapped at for
disagreeing with someone.
I'm quite familiar with your presence here and don't know that you've
ever pissed me off. You post often enough that I recognize you but not
so often that I have a strong sense of agreeing or disagreeing with
you in general. I don't mean that as a negative, but the more frequent
posters often discuss things in ways that provide little biographical
details and it builds an image, even if it's only of someone who has a
lot of pets or lives overseas. And I think some of the off-topic and
off-handed comments emerge from that, because people do become
familiar personalities.
I think you may be oversensitive on the clubbiness of the place. The
fact that someone will pick up on a remark doesn't mean everyone else
got it, too. There are a lot of jokes and references here that I don't
get, but I let them pass over and play with the ones I do get. I don't
understand math, so the binary references and other geeky references
are over my head. I don't read or watch science fiction, so most of
those references are lost on me, too. That's a lot that I'm not part
of, but I'm probably one of the most frequent posters, so I really
don't think there's a direct relation between frequency and inclusion.
Another thing to watch here is how people who disagree strongly in
some areas (by which I mean politics and religion, the traditional
danger zones) are able to scream at each other in those threads and
then share a joke and salute an insight in some of the others. There
are really only a handful of people here who can't disagree in a civil
manner, and I suspect they don't do much better in three-dimensional
relationships either, which is kind of sad.
As for welcoming newcomers, we've seen some rocky starts over the
years and some of those people do settle in and find a niche. I think
second and third chances are pretty abundant here, moreso than a lot
of other places I've seen.
Having said that, I think the Frog Applause thread was a bit of sock-
puppet trollery -- a Google search shows that eveoey@xxxxxxxxx has
posted to Usenet only once, the message that opened the thread, while
pageburner@xxxxxxxxxxx, the much-aggrieved person who responded, has
only posted three times, all to that thread.
By contrast, TH, who started the Keenspot thread, has a varied and non-
controversial posting history elsewhere, though he apparently has not
posted here from that address. I'd be willing to chalk that up to a
bad first impression, blow it off and hope he sticks around. He
wouldn't be the first.
