http://www.unitedfeatures.com/ufs/news/20070611secretasianman.pdfHere UFS claims that this is "the first-ever nationally syndicated
comic strip featuring an Asian American leading character."
But how can they ignore the "The Legend of Bruce Lee",http://penandbrush.net/01salty/brucelee.html
nationally syndicated by the L.A.Times Syndicate from 1982 -83?
Okay, a couple more.
In the early thirties Bell Syndicate distributed
"Fu Manchu" by Leo O'Mealia from 1931 - 33.

Later that same decade McNaught Syndicate
put "Charlie Chan" by Alfred Andriola in
newspapers nation-wide 1938 -1942.

While it would be a stretch to call such people as
Connie in "Terry and the Pirates" or Ming the Merciless
leading characters, I do think it could be successfully
argued that the Dragon Lady in the 1990s revival of
"Terry and the Pirates" was one of the leading characters.
I think Charlie Chan was Hawaiian, but none of those others
would be Asian Americans, would they? Or did Bruce Lee
become a citizen in the Green Hornet era?
I don't know about the comic strip Bruce Lee. But in real life Lee,
although raised in Hong Kong, was born in San Francisco, and thus was
a U.S. citizen by birth.
