Amen, brother!

Tove

Thanks! (That's my HP ScanJet IIcx scanner in the final panel.)

I'm still using XP, so my HP ScanJet isn't a doorstop yet . . .

I had to buy a new computer in January and got the Vista disks as a
free upgrade a little later. However, before I installed them, I heard
from one of our correspondents who was having trouble filing her
report because her new computer had Vista and all her peripherals had
quit working.

She got it whipped into shape, with a fair amount of help from someone
who knows such stuff, but when I asked her if I should go ahead and
install it, she suggested I use the disks to supplement my collection
of AOL coasters -- that the improvements were not worth the hassles of
conversion.

I'd hold on to them, but wait to install until they quit offering patches
for XP. Did they send you an actual XP upgrade like you would buy in a
store, or one of those lame 'install images' that only include the drivers
for your brand and model? If the latter, make sure you spool off all your
data and other added software, and print out all your config settings,
before you start. Custom load images, aka 'restore' disks, have a bad habit
of nuking everything. Vista is pretty, but it is a pig for resources. And as
your correspondent found out the hard way, they did put it on the street
before all the drivers were supplied by the various hardware vendors. So you
also wanna download Vista drivers for all your hardware, to a CD, before you
upgrade.

(stuff like that is why I keep a spare configured PC in the corner- if I
hose up the main machine, I always have a backup that I can still get out
on.)

FWIW MicroSoft has been after the vendors for years to have the
drivers ready. If your feeling brave you can configure it as an
XP/Vista duel boot machine.
