No but if one is going to opine in a intelligent discussion on relativity
or
the unified theory of gravity, one should a little more than that Einstein
guy said E=Mc^2 without understanding its implications.

And to discuss a comic strip one must read the entire Christian Bible? You
think that's a fair analogy?

Why are you so resistant to the notion that, in order to understand
western culture, you need to have more than a vague idea of what is
contained in the book that forms the greatest part of its cultural
underpinnings?

Read the whole thing? Hell no. But, as he said, to be part of an
intelligent discussion, you need more than a vague notion that the
book exists and has something to do with god. Yes.

I don't think it's considered oppressive to expect people to recognize
Romeo and Juliet, Gunga Din, Captain Ahab or Abraham Lincoln. You
don't have to know Timon of Athens, Kim, Billy Budd or Hannibal
Hamlin.

(If you stick to Marmaduke and Garfield, you'll probably be okay. Stay
away from Family Circus and deep stuff like that.)
