But assuming that it's a privately funded clinic, is it really their

not keep track of how many traffic or parking tickets or incidents of
spousal abuse also?
I certainly wouldn't want to check into a clinic where the
receptionist was loaded, but she made it clear that she only did it
occasionally.

I'd imagine that a lot has to do with the nature of the business. If I were hiring someone to
write ad copy or tend plants, then I wouldn't care. If I'm hiring someone to work in an
environment rich in prescription pharmaceuticals, then I wouldn't be too anxious to hire
someone who considers laws concerning their use to be more along the lines of suggestions than
strictures.

Operating on the premise that companies only do things because either
(1) they are required by law, (2) they seek to maximize their
profits, or (3) they seek to minimize their risk, I believe most drug
screening would fall under (3). An employee of a company who is
involved in an accident while performing his duties could leave the
company exposed to liability. Furthermore, employees with "unhealthy"
lifestyles leave the company at risk to higher employee healty
insurance costs.

Drug testing can help screen out applicants at higher risk or at least
provide the company with defense should they be sued for the actions
of their employees.
