I think you understate the importance of reading to writing; it's very
difficult to develop real skill at the latter without having done a lot
of the former.

Exactly. A certain amount of reading is a prerequisite, and more is
helpful preparation, but further reading is not a substitute for training
and practice in *writing* (or speaking, or thinking).
