Interesting. My take on Calvin and Hobbes was almost the opposite of yours.
I always thought of Calvin as a very sad character because someday he'd grow
up and have to lose his best friend (same reason "Puff the Magic Dragon"
brings a tear to my eye...and don't be afraid to admit it, yours too). I
thought the strip's only salvation from the abyss was the fact that Calvin
would never age and thus never have to face that day. When the strip was
ending, some pundits suggested that the last strip should show Calvin waking
up in the morning and finally seeing Hobbes as the stuffed tiger everyone
else sees. I thought that was the worst possible idea ever and am glad
Watterson, if he ever considered it, did it his way instead.
