I love clever TV ads ... but this wasn't one of them.
I groan every time another classic song with a powerful message is
hijacked to sell a product. Probably the most ironic example ever was
taking Melanie's diatribe against commercialization ("Look What They've
Done To My Song, Ma") and making it "Look What We've Done To Ramada". This
week I lost my lunch over a commercial featuring Rick Nelson's brilliant
satire about being booed off the stage by fans who refused to hear
anything but his oldies ("Garden Party"), now rewritten to push some
idiotic fast food restaurant's salad bar.
Oh, the humanity!

Add this to your "musical irony in ads" collection:

Here's an excerpt:
"Among the many examples that come to mind are Microsoft's use of the
Rolling Stones' 'Start Me Up' to sell Windows. Their edit conveniently
leaves out the refrain 'You make a grown man cry'-a sentiment all too
familiar to Windows users."
Maybe they should have used "Crash" by the Dave Matthews Band?
