I have to say, I sympathize with Liz for wanting to move away from
Mtigwhateverki. It can't be easy, moving from a fairly populated area in
the South to a remote village in the Great White North. I've lived my
entire life in the literal shadow of New York, which has spoiled me in
terms of having everything I could possibly want no more than 15 minutes
away. I've also spent time visiting relatives in a remote area in Maine,
and by the second day I'm ready to tear my hair out. I could never live
someplace where "going to town" for supplies and groceries needed to be
planned days in advance, no matter how beautiful and serene it was. I'm
used to walking around the corner, hopping into my car or (at the absolute
worst) getting on the train for a 10-minute ride to Manhattan.
It's admirable and understandable of her to want to spend more time with
her family, specifically the kids and Grandpa Jim (maybe there's some
foreshadowing here that the strip may outlive poor Grandpa). And I'm glad
to see that she's not moving back in with the folks, either ... she'll
have an independent apartment and the city surroundings she desires, but
she'll be close enough to come home more often that she did in the village
(that is, if she gets herself in gear and gets a car ... maybe her comment
in her letter about having some money saved up means she'll get one ...
and I'm sure Gordon would give her a large discount).
I was also sort of surprised to see that Paul really wasn't mentioned
until the end of the letter. He seems to have gone down on her list of
priorities. But with the strip ending pretty soon, I guess Lynn doesn't
have the luxury of a long courtship where they have more time to get to
know each other and hash out their problems. I guess that's where Paul's
"marry me or I'm gone" attitude is coming from - she probably doesn't want
to end the strip without a definitive conclusion to their relationship -
either their marriage or a breakup (somehow, I was anticipating a quickie
home marriage while Grandpa Jim was on his deathbed).
Mike's letters have always bothered me. He comes across as an egotistical
jerk. I know it's credited to his journalism degree and his love of the
written word, but come on! I have a journalism degree too, but I don't
think I come across as arrogant and annoying as he does (I hope not,
anyway!!!).
His character in the strip seems pretty laid-back and "everyman," but his
letters all seem like applications to Mensa. When I read the monthly
letters, I keep picturing him walking around an art gallery with a monacle
and a pipe, stroking his chin and saying, "I say Deanna, what dost thou
think of this lovely Picasso?"
