My sister is a cat lady and has about 7-8 cats in various stages of
domestic to feral. She maintains peace by separating them based on who
can come in the front door or the back door, time (some come in at
night, others go out), territory, house privileges, who's allowed in
certain rooms, who's restricted to the porch, etc. Of course, she
spends a lot of time, and gets up several times during the night,
moving cats around. My sister is a lunatic, so that helps.
Are you my sister-in-law? Sure sounds like our place.
We have six cats, all but two were formerly ferals. They've all been
spayed or neutered, but there are a lot of old hatreds among them that
make the Iraqi Sunni/Shia rift look like a friendly rivalry. At
certain times they can manage to ignore each other, but after several
days of quiet, the peace of the house will be shattered by a screech of
death, and I'll come a-running. The aggressor (if one of the ferals)
gets to go outside for a while. You think the expression "herding
cats" is a joke? Come visit me.
