I doubt this is official policy as much as it is some jerk getting off
on the power he suddenly has over other people: A couple of years ago,
when I was picking up my teenage son at Newark Airport, it somehow
didn't occur to me that going to an arrivals gate required the same
security procedure as going to a departure gate, so I had my Swiss Army
Knife keychain in my pocket. The security people offered to hold onto
it for me while I waited for the flight to arrive. Absolutely no
problem.
