While it's ridiculous to search (just to take one example from real
life) a former U.S. vice-president's hand luggage, it's equally
ridiculous to search one-armed Amish grandmothers. If you're going to
profile based on personal characteristics, then just *profile*,
already. Exempting the politically powerful from searches smacks a
lot more (as you sort of note in snipped text) of bestowing privilege
than of making security measures more focused and effective.

I doubt that even federal judges generally have personal security
details assigned to watch their luggage for them. Probably not many
congressmen, either.
There is a proposal floating around out there to issue special IDs
indicating a background check and a certain measure of training (e.g.,
"Keep an eye on your damn luggage") to enable frequent travellers to
bypass some portion of the TSA checks. I have mixed feelings about
that one, but I definitely hate it a lot less than exempting certain
designated public officials.

What about a dessert chef who simply developed diabetes along the way?
