Back to the strip, I think the point was that there are folks in the
world that confuse wearing a ribbon with actually doing something
significant to solve the problem. Sort of like the folks that confuse
wearing a cross with actually living according to the pronouncements of
the guy that died on one. Or the folks that think that budget will
balance itself if they talk about cutting spending (while raising it
instead).
IME, the folks with the ribbon-wearing delusions are politically liberal.
The closer to Hollywood, the more likely the incidence.
Recently, there have been a few examples that refute that generalization.
For example the actress that was at some sort of confab that realized she
(and most of the people sitting at the conference) could easily write a
$20k check that would buy mosquito netting for people living in the third
world. She stood up and turned the event into a fund raiser.
You have said better something than nothing. I agree. But I also think
we need to be realistic about the size of our efforts.
