Ribbons irritate the heck out of me -- i loved the Seinfeld episode
in which Kramer (participating in a "walk for" event) refused to
wear one and got chased down the street -- but i think the theory
behind them is that you can get 100 people to buy a ribbon
easily, because people like little identifying doodads -
t-shirt logos, bumper stickers, badges, ribbons. Tells the world
one little bit of "This is who i am." It's damn smart to capitalize
on that for a good cause. The 25-cents'es of those 100 people
will put 25.00 in the till while maybe 2 people are taking the time
to make a 5.00 box. And that's not meant to be a slam - many
of us are caring people but with 90 gazillion things competing for
our time and attention.
And apparently, since the anthrax scare, individuals can't just
send an "any soldier" box independently anymore. Has to be through
an organization, where someone vets them. Bless the people who
put this together!
