I learned a lot from those. They also set me up for the British boy's
comic magazines, "Swift" and "Eagle," which often harked back to the
Victorian ethos of "muscular Christianity," plucky heroism and "England
expects that every man will do his duty." And I later became a
collector of G.A. Henty, the 19th century boys' novelist who typified
those principles.
