Unreachable Star Reviews June 7th, 2006 (SPOILERS)

This is our 172nd edition, with just one book this week. I'll be
spoiling significant elements of it because, well, with just one book,
why not?

This week, we have...

New X-Men #27 - "Crusade, Part 4 of 4" (Writers: Craig Kyle & Chris
Yost, Pencils: Paco Medina, Inks: Juan Vlasco)

Styker and his commandos storm the school, intent on killing mutants
and in particular one ex-mutant left on the ground. Meanwhile,
Nimrod has revived and has plans of its own.

It's mostly a big fight, and perhaps surprisingly given the recent
tone of the book, there's only one more death (and it's a very minor
character). But it's not bad. The fight scene's relatively fun,
although nothing special, and there's some good moments.

Of course there are some annoying flaws. X-23 shows up right in
time to save the day of course, but that's not too bad. What's a
little stranger is despite the fact that although a bunch of students
were shown going to investigate all the ruckus, they don't appear
anywhere else in the issue and are presumably not among the 'nine
kids' who helped stop the whole assault (they're naturally Frost's
pet squad, although even there I'm not sure of the numbering). Also,
Dust seems pretty free with the killing. This isn't entirely
inconsistent, considering she killed in her first appearance ever,
but since then she's been fairly quiet and so pious I wondered if
they were going to excuse her previous violence as some kind of
temporary psychotic break. Because of that, I can't really call it a
mistake, but it is something I'd expect them to follow up on and
explain at some point in the near future.

Overall, perhaps because there's no mind-bogglingly abitrary decisions
made and it's the end, it does wind up being one of the better issues
of the new run. Of course, that won't necessarily save it if the nexr
issue or two aren't dramatically better, as my inkling towards dropping
the title remains.

Oh, and I guess it's my Pick of the Week. A win by default is still a
win.

Well, that's it for this week folks. Next week, according to the
shipping list, there'll be three books. There's Ultimate X-Men #71,
Cable & Deadpool #29, and Civil War #2.

See you next week...
