Ok, I've been thinking about how important it is that Kid Vulcan is a
successful addition to the X-Men cast, primarily as a new (old?) X-Man.
Bear with me on this.

Think of all the non-successful attempts in recent years to add new
characters to the core X-Men roster. Marrow, Maggott and Cecilia Reyes
for better or worse never really stuck around. Slipstream, Lifeguard,
Thunderbird III - the less said, the better (or maybe they never got
their chance either). Most of Generation X have been killed off or
depowered, and the original New Mutants disappointingly never seemed to
have graduated to being full X-Men - with the possible exception of
Cannonball, and let's face it he's been on and off the cast like a
yo-yo. Juggernaut left when Austen and is now on a side book, Sage got
booted off the main cast for Psylocke's ressurection - and unless
Claremont writes her, I don't see her returning (despite the fact I
personally think she's been very well integrated, when she isn't just a
walking deus ex machina). Emma Frost may be the only "new" X-Man to
have truly stuck around - but then again, her ascent to X-Man status
has been a very very long one, consistent with the character, and
perhaps well earned. However that said, given the way the wind seems
to be blowing, she could become a villian yet again...

The point is this. Given the large pile of unsuccessful, non-permanent
additions to the main X-Men cast, hopefully a good, interesting
character will be the one to break this rut. Will it be Kid Vulcan?
Hopefully. He has a backstory that ties him in important ways to the
X-Men. He has a direct familial relationship with Cyclops and Havok.
He's set to be the driver of the first Brubaker written Uncanny X-Men
arc. His chances of success, on paper at least, seem almost a dead
cert.

But will he be? If Kid Vulcan fails as a character - if once Brubaker
leaves, he's just shuffled off into limbo - what chances are there for
*any other new X-Men*? Or should they work at developing existing
characters, or finally letting in the New Mutants or Gen X into the
cast?

Thoughts, feelings, opinions? Does what I'm saying make any sense? I
hope so.

Except that (still a Kid?) Vulcan is slated to be a villain.

Come July, he's going to be a member of the X-Men (in UNCANNY). Plus,
basically the entire next year of UNCANNY (starting in July) is
supposed to be about him. Every third issue will be focusing on him,
and the other two-thirds will be focusing on the story about him.

With that degree of force, I can't imagine him staying around once
Brubaker is gone. By the time July 2007 rolls around, I'll bet most
people are sick and tired of Vulcan.

He's not supposed to be amember. He's supposed to be headed into space
to take his anger out on the Shiar. At least that's what I heard.
He's supposed to be basically in revenge mode for the next year.
