Something was done--aside from his deal with the devil (and I laugh at
how Joe Q doesn't see it that way)--that removed all knowledge of
Peter's ID from the minds of everyone on Earth. And whatever that was,
Peter is aware of the "who/what/when/where/why/how" of it.
But the logiic twists up becase there was no historical change.
Supposedly everyone just forgot that Peter was Spider-Man and that
there was never any marriage between Peter and MJ. ?Without the
historical change there's no way that you can explain an historical
happening where Spider-Man's identity was erased from everyone's
memory, not to mention any hard evidence supporting it all.
The memory erasure would certainly have been significant either before
or during OMD that it would have been chronicled in one of the titles.
But we know that it didn't happen before OMD because SHIELD was
looking for Peter/Spider-Man. So are we to believe that there was a
large time gap between OMD and BND during which this happened? ?I felt
that BND began the day after OMD. ?No evidence other than it felt like
the next morning.

--IIRC there *was* a gap in time between OMD and BND.
Indicated by what? ?All indications were that Peter falls asleep with
May still on her death bed and then he wakes up with May not only
healthy but in a house that was supposedly destroyed. ?Nothing said,
"Six months later..."

--by virtue of the fact that Peter doesn't wake up next to Aunt May,
and that we know that Harry rebuilt her house. There's a clear time
gap. Though it didn't become readily apparent. It took a few months.
But it's Mephisto. He made stuff happen retroactively anyway, like
Harry being alive. There's no reason it couldn't be the next morning,
but Aunt May's house was rebuilt 6 months ago. I assume May never got
shot at all too.
She must have gotten shot. Remember, the only thing Mephistod did was
invalidate the marriage and, apparently, remove everyone's memory of
Peter's identity. Everything else happened as portrayed. At least
that's what Marvel said when it happened.
