...Kids, I was referring to his fainting in shock. THat's all :-P

Its probably just me or how I read the comics but JJJ isn't a stupid
guy. I honestly always took him as going after Spidey not because of
great hatred but because it wouldn't be a shock. Because he knew and
has known for quite a long time. Having a shocked and bitter Jonah
really was a letdown. I mean maybe it would work with a lesser
character but I've always liked his character and how he was in his
own way a guiding force almost a begrudging father figure to Peter.
Theres a panel in one of the comics after Peter has had success with
the WEBS spidey photos book where JJJ kinda dismisses the whole thing
in front of Pete but when he leaves he opens up his desk to reveal the
book there. JJJ is proud and it always seemed to me even as a kid
especially from that point on that the whole Spider-Man menace thing
was a complete facade, a way for JJJ to protect someone he cared
about.

The bitter JJJ that fired Robbie, that punched Pete thats not the
character I grew up with. Not the character I liked at all and
definitely was not one of the reasons I went to college and did
journalism.

But again thats just how I took the character and why the way it
played out "personally" was very disappointing to me. Not stating
facts here just how I felt about the whole thing. He was my favorite
background character.

OK, I just have a different view of the character...I don't see JJJ as
having that much depth...with him, what you see is what you get...he
has an irrational hatred of Spiderman (which Peter has actually egged
on with his little pranks over the years) and he sees Peter as one of
his inner circle...so, when he finds out the object of his hatred has
been right under his nose all along (basically laughing at him), it
drives him nuts...not only because of the personal betrayal but also
because he's angry that he didn't figure it all out sooner.

Your opinion of JJJ's role with Spidey is kind of how I feel about
Commisioner Gordon with Batman...or even Perry White with Superman...I
could totally believe that they know Batman's or Superman's
secret...but I don't see JJJ falling into that category...but that's
just me.

and me.  Robbie was the father figure.  He knew Peter was Spidey,
offered advice/encouragement, and was proud of him.  JJJ (I agree he's a
great character) was there for comedic relief and to create hardships
for both Peter and Spidey.  I guess you missed that somehow.

Oh, I love JJJ...I just don't believe he's known Spidey's secret all
along...he's not that perceptive...and I also agree that Robbie is the
father figure and I could totally believe that he knew the secret but
just chose to keep it to himself.

You seriously think that JJJ the editor of the paper and not a stupid
man or ever really portrayed as one has this glaring blind spot. He's
a reporter first and foremost, journliasts rely on there gut instincts
to get there stories and really good journalists like Jameson would
have no doubt about his identity. Robbie is the nice calmer side that
grounds JJJ and sure he probably knows Parkers identity however has it
ever occured that JJJ uses Robbie as a buffer. A public face to show
his softer side leaving JJJ to do the hard work and potray the
business side of the newspaper business. There is no way Robbie would
have stayed so long with JJJ if he thought he was a stupid man or that
he didnt respect him. How can you find the editor and chief of the
Daily Bugle and long running character in Spider-Man..not that
perceptive? Its like the Commisioner Gordon or Joker rule sure they
know but telling it proves no real purpose for either character.

I really do think that JJJ has a giant Spiderman-shaped blind
spot...he's totally irrational when it comes to Spiderman and everyone
in the book knows it. We all have blind spots like that...most of us
just aren't quite as over the top as JJJ...his not knowing the secret
doesn't make him stupid.

I never really thought of JJJ as being all that great a
journalist...he's more of a business-man...he understands the
newspaper business and has made it his life but that doesn't make him
a great reporter...and he has RARELY been depicted as such...Robbie
and/or Phil Urich are the great journalists.

Seeing him as just a comedic foil really doesnt say much for your
thoughts on his character.

You may not like it but, most often, Jameson has been portrayed as
just that...a comedic foil...I'm certainly not saying that's all he's
ever been but it is how he has been most of the time...and that goes
all the way back to the beginning.
