Seems to show her hair wild and loose with the band still straight, to me
that suggests it's not part of her hair, it's on top of it.

Though looking at
http://members.fortunecity.com/dm_bishop2/marvel/crystal003.jpg I can see
why from the front it might be taken for hair.

It's just the back was so complex it seemed unlikely to be naturalm, or even
a dye job.
