But this is the funny thing, he wasn't on any morphine or any other

....The Zoltan I've been on for DKA issues before, and while I haven't
had to take it in over two years, it does help quite a bit. One of the
problems with pain meds administered via IV is that they can actually
work more towards killing your appetite than some of the suppressants
that are by prescription only. After a while, peristalsis will sort of
shut itself off, and when you do intake food it simply sits in the
stomach and doesn't go anywhere. That happens enough times, and the
stomach starts thinking it needs to reverse the process.
He never had to use morphine, even on his last days alive, a morphine
pump was brought into his room as a precaution, but it was never
connected up to him. Everyone was amazed that he never needed any
kind of pain medication, we had morphine at home in case of his
condition getting worse, but it was never needed. We all feared the
pain that he would get, as we knew Pancreatic Cancer is terminal in
the worst of cases, my dad being given 12 months, and even if it is
caught in time, the best a patient can hope for is a few years. There
are rare occassions where the sufferer beats it, but again, they are
rare.
....Again, true. You have to be diagnosed and receive treatment at just
the right time - which is really difficult - or a year is about the
best one can hope for. I found out an old co-worker has been diagnosed
with that form of cancer just this past week, and he's starting the
treatments in Houstopolis this Thursday. They say they *think* they
caught it early enough to force it into either complete remission or
at least enough to where they can contain it and possibly consider
surgery. But it's nuking and chemo for now, which has his two kids
rather pissed because he says their mom has informed them that they
have to start sharing their pot with their father when he needs to eat
:-)
That my father did not was extraordinary. It is something we are
grateful for every single day.
....He was lucky. What happens in that sort of situation is that the
cancer had most likely damaged the nerves leading to the pancreas -
and probably the liver - in such a way that they simply disconnected
without triggering the pain reflex.
Regardless, you do have my sympathies.
